Urban Purpose Run: My First 5K
Saturday, September 27, 2014

We all need practice. I believe God always prepares us for what we need in the present as well as what is ahead. This is TherapySouth's second year to sponsor this race, which by the way, is a ministry that is very close to my heart. Urban Purpose was started by a friend, Jim McFarland, in our Sunday School class who felt called to go downtown Birmingham and serve the homeless. I remember when he and his wife, Karen started taking snacks, drinks, blankets and clothes to people on Sunday afternoons. My children still have a memory of  filling up some ziplock baggies full of snacks to donate when they were first getting started, so sweet. Now Urban Purpose provides a meal for about 100-150 people every single Sunday with the help of volunteers! I was able to go…

Get Set

"Therefore, we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud  of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us"
Hebrews 12:1

For the past three weeks, I have begun to"ease" into running and may even be..almost.. to the point of saying.. that I like it (very softly:)). I made the decision to RUN in The Race for the Cure this year. Period. I put it out here in the blog world for some accountability and within a day or two God had sent me a running partner! I didn't think of that, He did! So, see there, if we sign up for the challenge, He will provide who and what we need! Now, I must tell you about the big event of my first run with my new partner. She told me that she runs about three miles, has a great route and we can go early morning. We set up the time, all the while, I am thinking to myself, "I will show up, and after that first mile, I will just have t…

On Your Mark

"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." 2 Timothy 4:7

While walking on my everyday path and praying about the upcoming Race for the Cure, that I plan to RUN this year, my eyes fell right upon this cross. (picture to the left). I am sure if any of my neighbors were looking out their window it was a sight to see me staring at the ground and saying "only You, God" (and likely very loudly, due to the fact that I had my earbuds in and music blaring)! Two pieces of pine straw put perfectly together to form the cross on the road. What a sweet reminder of God's love! After I snapped a picture, I began to pick up the pace a bit and RUN. Baby steps. My faith in myself had been renewed that I was reminded to look to Jesus to help me run this race. The problem is I don't like to run. I never have, walking is just fine with! To be honest, I have never challenged myself to do so. So, this is the year! It's my way of…
